Material Recovery Process

From documented collection to certified dispatch — every step in NEPL's recycling process is structured for regulatory compliance, environmental safeguards, and verifiable material recovery.

11-Step Processing Architecture

01

Collection

E-waste received from authorized sources — EPR producers, authorized collection centres, bulk consumers, manufacturers, dealers, service centres, refurbishers, and institutional collection programmes.

02

Weighing & Inspection

Incoming consignments weighed on calibrated scales, visually inspected for physical condition, and documented with receipt records including source, category, and quantity.

Equipment: Weighing Scales (2 units)

03

Segregation

Category-wise sorting of received e-waste. Hazardous components (batteries, mercury lamps, capacitors, toner cartridges, refrigerant-containing units) identified and separated for specialized handling.

04

Dismantling

Manual dismantling at 16 dedicated workstations, each equipped with local exhaust ventilation (suction hoods, cyclone separators, emission stacks) for worker safety and emission control. Components separated into recoverable fractions.

Equipment: 16 Dismantling Tables, Conveyor Belts (5), Screwdriver Sets, Pliers, Soldering Irons

05

Component-Specific Processing

Specialized processing for regulated components: battery removal and segregation, CRT cutting and glass separation, refrigerant gas recovery, compressor disassembly, motor recycling, cable stripping and conductor recovery.

Equipment: Compressor Cutting Machine, Gas Recovery Machine, Oil Recovery Facility, CRT Cutting Machine, Wire Stripper, Tube Light Crushing Machine

06

Size Reduction

Mechanical shredding of dismantled components to reduce particle size for downstream separation processes. Dust collection via pulse jet bag filters prevents particulate emissions.

Equipment: Shredder (with suction hoods + bag filter)

07

Mechanical Material Separation

Multi-stage separation to isolate material fractions: Magnetic separation (ferrous metals), Eddy current separation (non-ferrous metals like copper and aluminium), Density-based separation (plastics, ceramics), Air classification (light fractions).

Equipment: Magnetic Separator, Eddy Current Separator, Density Separator, Conveyor Systems

08

Smelting & Hydrometallurgical Recovery

Precious metal recovery from PCBs and metal-rich fractions through smelting (thermal processing with PNG-fueled furnace) and hydrometallurgical treatment systems for higher-purity recovery.

Equipment: Smelting Furnace (PNG, 20 kg/day), Hydrometallurgical Precious Metal Recovery System

09

Quality Inspection & Packing

Recovered materials undergo quality inspection before being packed and prepared for dispatch to authorized downstream partners — refineries, smelters, and material processors.

Equipment: Baling Machine, Cages (10), Wooden Pallets (10), Hand Pallet Trucks (4)

10

Hazardous Waste Management

Regulated hazardous fractions — batteries, mercury-containing lamps, CRT glass, toner cartridges, capacitors, and refrigerant oils — are stored in designated areas and channelized to authorized Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDF).

11

Documentation & Certification

Complete documentation maintained for every consignment: receipt records, processing logs, recovery records, dispatch records, hazardous waste manifests, and compliance certificates issued to stakeholders.

Recoverable Materials

The following material fractions are typically recoverable from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE):

Material FractionTypical Composition (% by weight)
Ferrous Metals (iron, steel)25–50%
Non-Ferrous Metals (copper, aluminium, zinc)10–25%
Plastics (ABS, HIPS, PP, PC)15–30%
Glass (CRT, LCD panels)5–20%
Printed Circuit Boards & Components3–8%
Rubber, Ceramics, Wood & Other5–15%

Composition ranges are indicative and vary based on the type and age of equipment processed.
